| Over 75 years ago, Joseph Pilates developed a revolutionary method of exercise which lengthens, strengthens, and tones muscles without creating bulk. This exercise method develops proper body alignment and improves coordination, as well as increases a sense of body awareness. As the spine becomes elongated and the abdominals create a strong "center," posture improves and injuries may be prevented. Proper breathing techniques are emphasized in combination with movement, exercising the mind as well as the body. Pilates is practiced on the floor (mat work) and also with specialized equipment (apparatus) which is spring-loaded and simulates the mechanismsof human muscle tissue. |
